Walgreens to Enter Alaska Market

Deerfield, Ill.-based Walgreen Co. announced plans to expand into Alaska in 2009, with the first set of locations opening in Anchorage during summer 2009. According to the company, it will initially focus on opening stores in Anchorage and South-central Alaska. "With a fast-growing, over-65 population, the need for pharmacy and related health services is expanding in Alaska," said William Hose, vice president of store operations for Alaska for Walgreens. "We’ll help meet those needs with services that are currently hard to find or don’t exist in the market." The Alaska stores will feature pharmacy services in 14 languages, convenience foods, greeting cards, digital photography services, cosmetics and beauty supplies, Cafe W, beauty advisors, DHL shipping services and household goods. The new stores will employ 25 to 30 workers. Walgreens operates 6,204 stores in 49 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
