Wal-Mart Launches Web Site for Marketside Concept
June 27, 2008

With the launch of the new Web site www.marketside.com, Bentonville, Ark.-based Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has confirmed plans to open a new small-format grocery concept, dubbed Marketside, according to Progressivegrocer.com. The Web site also confirmed Wal-Mart's plans to open four stores in the Phoenix area this fall, located in Gilbert, Mesa, Chandler and Tempe. Analysts have said the Marketside concept, a 15,000-sq.-ft. format, is designed to rival Tesco's Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market, which made its U.S. debut within the past year. The Web site describes the format as "a small community grocery store owned by Wal-Mart Stores Inc.," with an emphasis on fresh food, complete meal solutions and everyday favorites.
