California Gets Its First Retail Hydrogen Gas Station
June 30, 2008
Los Angeles City Councilman Bill Rosendahl pumped fuel into his sports utility vehicle Thursday at the opening of California's first retail hydrogen gas station, according to the Associated Press. His Chevrolet Equinox now emits nothing but water vapor. Supporters of hydrogen-powered fuel-cell vehicles are hoping the station will show the public that hydrogen can become a mainstream alternative to petroleum. "It was only a few years ago that this was just a concept; now you can see it, touch it and feel it," said Fred Joseck, technology analyst of the U.S. Department of Energy's hydrogen program. About 100 hydrogen-powered vehicles are running in California as part of motor companies' demonstration programs, but auto makers have said that mass producing the cars is a challenge because of the heavy cost and lack of hydrogen fueling stations.
