June 04, 2008

Birmingham, Ala.-based Books-A-Million Inc. reported net income of $900,000 for the first quarter ending May 3, 2008, compared with $2.1 million for the same time period last year. Net sales declined 0.7 percent to $115.5 million, versus $116.3 million; while same-store sales decreased 3.4 percent. "Our first quarter results were affected by a very challenging economic environment," said Sandra B. Cochran, president and CEO of Books-A-Million. "We are focused on executing the fundamentals of managing inventory, controlling costs and maintaining margins, while adjusting our merchandising plan to meet the demands of a cost-conscious consumer." The company operates 207 stores in 20 states and the District of Columbia.
