Wal-Mart Remains Atop NRF's Top 100 Retailer List
July 02, 2008
Bentonville, Ark.-based Wal-Mart Stores Inc. remained No. 1 on the National Retail Federation's (NRF) Top 100 retailer list, a rank the company has held since 1992. The rankings are based on retail sales data collected in 2007, and list companies with 2007 revenue equal to or higher than 10 percent of the revenue category leader. Wal-Mart reached the top with $378.8 billion in revenue. The highest-ranked retailers provide mainly necessities, as evidenced by the top six: (in declining order) Wal-Mart, Kroger, Home Depot, CVS Caremark drugstores, Costco and Target. To keep up with the current retail environment, NRF added a new category this year for technology and entertainment companies, which included No. 52-ranked Apple Stores/iTunes. "iTunes, the world's biggest digital music store, edged out Best Buy and Target" in music sales, said Susan Reda, executive editor of NRF's Stores magazine. She also cited the iPhone launch as a boost to Apple Stores' revenue. The opening of 20 "Lifestyle" stores likely helped Pleasanton, Calif.-based grocery chain Safeway snag No. 11, and Pleasanton, Calif.-based Ross Stores also made the list, reporting a 7.3 percent increase in revenue from 2006.
